Gastrointestinal leaks pose a high risk to patients who have undergone abdominal surgery. An early detection of the leak significantly improves the patient’s outcome. A collaboration between ETH Zurich and Empa has led to a chemical sensor that fits into the drain bottle at the patient’s bedside. The sensor reacts fast and can be monitored by eye.
